The Joy-Gratitude Connection

Here's what the research reveals about workplace wellbeing—and why it matters for your Q1 2026 planning.

Research makes one thing crystal clear…gratitude and joy aren't soft skills. They're strategic advantages. A study published in the National Library of Medicine’s National Center for Biotechnology Information found that when teammates expressed gratitude to each other during collaborative work tasks it promoted adaptive biological stress responses. Gratitude expressions actually buffered against threat responses during team collaboration and amplified challenge responses during individual performance tasks. Translation: workplace gratitude helps teams handle stress better and perform more effectively.

The researchers found that workplace gratitude acts as a buffer against stress, improves team cohesion, and helps employees maintain resilience during challenging periods. In other words, gratitude is a performance tool, not just a nice-to-have cultural element.

Here's where this connects to joy:

In my workshops, I teach that joy is the foundation of goal setting—not just the reward. And one of the fastest ways to access joy at work is through the practice of gratitude. Not forced "gratitude circles" that feel performative, but authentic recognition of progress, contribution, and growth.

When teams celebrate small wins alongside big achievements, they build momentum. When leaders recognize effort alongside outcomes, they create psychological safety. When organizations integrate gratitude into their rhythms, they don't just improve morale—they improve results.

This is exactly what I explore in my Purpose-Driven Leadership workshop: how to create a triple win (for you, your team, and your organization) by aligning goals with joy-driven practices. Reflection on what's working. Celebration of progress. Strategic planning rooted in clarity and purpose.

As you plan Q1 2026 professional development, ask yourself: Are we building cultures where people feel recognized? Where progress is celebrated? Where joy fuels performance?
